Gov. Abbott Appoints Hasan K. Mack to TABC Governing Board

AUSTIN – Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed a fifth member of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission's governing board.

Hasan K. Mack has been appointed to fill the seat being vacated by outgoing Commissioner Ida Clement Steen of San Antonio. Mack, a resident of Austin will join Chairman Kevin Lilly on the board, along with commissioners Jason E. Boatright, Deborah Gray Marino and M. Scott Adkins. The board was expanded from three members to five in 2019 following the passage of the TABC Sunset Bill.

Mack is chair of the Texas Southern University board of regents and an attorney for McCall, Parkhurst & Horton LLP, an Austin-based firm dealing with public finance law. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Houston and his law degree from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University. He previously served as a deputy general counsel in the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.

"Commissioner Mack is joining TABC at a very exciting time," Lilly said. "Last year's Sunset legislation made sweeping changes to the Alcoholic Beverage Code, helping TABC to fully modernize its infrastructure, services and regulatory guidance. I'm looking forward to working with Commissioner Mack as we implement these exciting changes."

Lilly also thanked Steen for her dedication to improving state government for the people of Texas.

"I'm truly grateful for Commissioner Steen's guidance and leadership over the past six years," Lilly said. "She welcomed me to the commission with open arms when I was appointed in 2017, and she's provided an outstanding example of public service not only for me, but to all of the commissioners and employees at TABC. Her warmth, humor and perspective will be missed. She is a truly great Texan."

Steen was appointed by then-Gov. Rick Perry in 2014 following her service as regent for the Texas A&M University system. She also served on the State Preservation Board, several inaugural committees as well as multiple charities and boards serving the healthcare needs of children.

Appointed directly by the Texas Governor, members of the commission are charged with providing leadership and guidance to TABC. The agency, which employs approximately 640 people, oversees more than 56,000 licensed businesses statewide and generates more than $300 million annually for the Texas treasury.
