Governor Abbott Names Two New Members to Recently Expanded Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission

AUSTIN – Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced the two newest members of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, expanding the board past three members for the first time in its 84-year history.

Michael S. "Scott" Adkins of El Paso and Deborah "Debbie" Gray Marino of San Antonio are joining the commission. Adkins and Marino will join TABC Chairman Kevin Lilly and Commissioner Jason E. Boatright and Commissioner Ida Louise "Weisie" Clement Steen.

The expansion of the governing board comes amid recent changes to TABC's structure stemming from a review of the agency by the Sunset Advisory Commission during the 86th Texas Legislative Session. During the 2019 session, lawmakers approved the TABC Sunset Bill, which included a measure expanding the agency's governing board from three members to five. The board has included just three members since it was established as the Texas Liquor Control Board in 1935.

"These appointments couldn't come at a better time for TABC," Chairman Lilly said. "As Commissioners Adkins and Marino take their seats, they will be helping to lead TABC through the most exciting chapter in its history. I'm grateful to Governor Abbott for his continued leadership and dedication to keeping TABC strong, and I congratulate both of our new commissioners on their appointment."

Appointed directly by the Texas Governor, members of the commission are charged with providing leadership and guidance to TABC. The agency, which employs approximately 640 people, oversees more than 56,000 licensed businesses statewide and generates more than $300 million annually for the Texas treasury.
