TABC Offers Assistance to Local Officials, Businesses Affected by Tropical Storm Imelda

As heavy rains from the former Tropical Storm Imelda devastate portions of southeast Texas, employees of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission are standing by to support local disaster response teams.

Agents from the agency's Law Enforcement division have formed quick response teams and are prepared to deploy in support of local law enforcement in the disaster area.

"As a state police agency, one of our duties is to support local law enforcement and first responders during periods of disaster," TABC Executive Director Bentley Nettles said. "During Hurricane Harvey, more than 75 percent of our entire Law Enforcement division deployed to the Gulf Coast to support public safety and security in the wake of severe storm damage."

One of the agency's other duties is assisting TABC license or permit holders whose businesses are affected by the weather, Nettles said.

"Once the floodwaters recede, our primary goal will be to reach out to affected businesses to assist with any questions or issues they have," he said. "In most cases, we're able to waive or postpone consequences resulting from missed deadlines or payments, and our Audit and Marketing Practices employees are available to answer questions related to damaged inventory or facilities."

TABC Chairman Kevin Lilly said the thoughts of all TABC employees are with residents and first responders in the affected area.

"We are proud to stand with our fellow Texans during this incredibly difficult time," Lilly said. "I want business owners and employees to know that TABC will work alongside Governor Abbott and our local, state and federal leaders to ensure every resource is made available as we begin the recovery process."

TABC's offices in Houston, Beaumont and Conroe were closed for business Thursday due to flash-flood conditions.

Business owners in need of assistance from TABC may contact their local TABC office or contact the agency's Austin headquarters at (512) 206-3333.
